Stone signpost
The stone signpost is located in Dutovlje at the crossroads for Komen. It is a limestone pillar about one metre in height with carved names of villages and arrows. In addition to the inscription Opicina–Trieste (Opčine–Trieste) on each side of the upper part of the signpost, there are also arrows with inscriptions Comeno (Komen) and S. Daniele (Štanjel).
The signpost was raised in 1920 and this year is carved in its base. It was supposedly built by the Department of Roads of the III. Italian Armada.
This armada’s task during World War I was to seize Trst. It was commanded by Duke of Aosta who died in 1931 in Torino. He is buried together with several thousand fallen soldiers from the III. Italian Armada at a military cemetery in Sredipolje (Redipuglia).
The monument in Sredipolje was officially unveiled by Benito Mussolini on 18 September 1938, as evidenced by an inscription at the top of the stairs before you descend to the chapel. |
