Teran Wine and Prosciutto Festival event area
The Teran wine and prosciutto are the most recognized delicacies from Karst, with the Teran Wine and Prosciutto Festival playing a significant role in their promotion. Upon the initiative of local winegrowers, the Teran Wine and Prosciutto Festival took place for the first time in 1970 in Dutovlje, the centre of the Karst wine-growing region. By adding ethnological, gastronomical, sports and recreational, cultural and entertainment content, the festival became Karst's largest tourist event and one of the biggest and oldest of its type in Slovenia.
Traditionally, the main part of the festival takes place on the second weekend in August, with the main event area located on the sports ground behind the primary school, while the visitors enjoy the shade of old Karst pines where local delicacies are even more delicious.
The festival activities begin one week earlier with the selection of the new Teran wine queen. After a break, the organizers revived this beautiful tradition in 2006. The public selection in front of an expert committee is based on practical and theoretical winemaking and viticultural knowledge as well as general knowledge from the field of tourism and knowledge of Karst. The selected girl receives the crown and has the honour to represent the Teran wine and Karst winemakers at various events for one year.
The main festival activities now usually take place for three days. The Friday night features fast music and dance rhythms and is intended for the young and young at heart. Saturday and Sunday both start with sports. Since 2000, the With a Bicycle to the Teran and Prosciutto Festival event takes place on Saturday morning, taking cyclists on a circular route through the heart of Karst. It is also suitable for families. Since 2007, a circular hike called “H nuogm na teran in pršut” (“Walking to the Teran and Prosciutto Festival) has been organized on the Sunday morning. At selected times, visitors can also enjoy a guided walk along the Teran circular walking route. On the Saturday afternoon, the Karst games (“Kraške igre”) take place, with teams competing in games from the past. Both on Saturday and on Sunday, gourmands and exhibition enthusiasts can enjoy the Karst Mosaic (“Kraški mozaik”) exhibition where products with a local note and guided tastings are offered. In the Bunčetovi Homestead in the village centre, the fair of herbs and Karst culinary delights takes place, which is otherwise organized once per month in the warm half of the year. The food from Karst produces pleasant fragrances in the event area where you can find other typical Karst food in addition to Teran wine and prosciutto: Istrian stew, dumplings, frittatas, cheese, “panceta” and “zašink” (prosciutto, “panceta” (cured pork belly) and “zašink” (cured neck meat) are EU protected since 2012 under the protected geographical indication), lamb, products from Karst honey that are also protected under the protected geographical indication, etc. A similar offer based on the Teran wine and dried meats can also be found in open wineries and cellars in the Dutovlje Local Community.
The biggest attraction of the festival is the Sunday procession of ethnologically themed wagons, which is presided over by the new queen of the Teran wine in a wagon pulled by Lipizzan horses. The Teran winemakers are the most excited about the selection of the best wines because the highest-ranked wines can then be served at specially prepared stalls. In the evening, the festive event is completed with dancing and music for all generations by established music groups and performers.
