Water through for livestock
Near the Križman Karst Pond, there is a concrete water trough at the wall. It was used for watering livestock before or after the daily grazing. Such troughs can be seen all over Karst, with most of them built after the end of World War II. There is a trough dated 1945 in Skopo, but some older troughs can also be found. In Kreplje, three troughs withstood the test of time and were renovated in 2012.
The numerous troughs indicate that there was a lot of livestock in the countryside. People also watered livestock in village ponds, with several ponds located in Dutovlje. The pond in Terjance next to the school playground was well-known. During harsh winters, children were able to enjoy the deeply frozen ice surface. There was also a large pond in the village centre in front of the Ukmar inn. Some locals still refer to that area as “next to the pond”. This pond was quite large and covered the area between the Bunčetovi Homestead and the Šemenjak house.
There are still two ponds in Dutovlje: The Mala or Križmanova lokovca (the Small or the Križman Pond) and the Velika lokovca (the Large Pond).
