The Mahne Villa
The building is located at the road to Nova Gorica. In front of the building, a road branches to the left, leading to the Dutovlje railway station and the Krasoprema furniture factory. On the opposite side of the road, a new health station with a pharmacy was opened in 2010.
The Mahne Villa was built in 1905 for Mister Mahne, after whom the building is named. It was first used as a holiday hotel for wealthy customers from Trieste who came to Karst for relaxation.
Later, the building was purchased by the Mutua fra impiegati insurance company from Trieste. It was first used to house the children of the insurance company members during vacations. In 1927, Mutua rebuilt the building into a beautiful and modern sanatorium for lung patients who received food five times per day. The food was mostly delivered from Trieste, with some food also being purchased in the Dutovlje store and the Ukmar butcher’s shop. In time, the sanatorium arranged its own garden, producing vegetables for own needs.
After 1943, the building was used for various purposes. During World War II, the fascists used it, living in it until 1944.
In May 1945, it was converted into a military hospital due to the attack on Trieste and many wounded. The military hospital operated for about three weeks.
From the end of 1945 to 1948, various courses were held in the building, including economy courses, party courses, trading courses, household courses, etc.
After the war ended and the new Yugoslavia was established, war orphans from Aegean Macedonia or today’s Greece lived in the building and were accompanied by educators of the same nationality. Due to the decreased number of orphans, this project was abolished in September 1951. After that, partisan orphans from Kojsko moved into the villa. In 1957, such activities were completely abolished and mostly the locals took care of the orphans.
In 1957, the Dutovlje Elementary School operated in the building until moving to the new location in 1980.
At the end of 1984, the Sežana Pensioner’s House opened a special branch of the House for mental difficulties in the villa and the institution was renamed to Dutovlje Social Protection Institute in 1993.

Today, many adults with long-term mental difficulties and mental disorders are located in this renovated and adapted building. In an effort to cooperate and coexist with the local environment and bringing it closer to the patients, the institute has arranged for a special exhibition and sales area where you can view and purchase various art products and useful tools that the patients are producing in work therapy. Pictures, drawings, clay products, knitting products and others are exhibited. They also sell herbs and spices packed in beautiful bags. In short, you can view and buy these interesting creations full of imagination produced by people that are unable to live alone due to health reasons in the Dutovlje Social Protection Institute every day between 10:00 and 18:00.
