Red soil
Red soil (“rusa zemlja”)* is the local name for the part of the village where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views on our circular walking route. It can be found in the side alley called “Dulnji konc” (the lower village) by the locals.
The viewpoint is overshadowed by old planes next to the supporting wall. You simply have to stop and enjoy the view of the hills and mountains to the north as well as the vineyards below you, which are especially beautiful in autumn in yellow and red shades. Due to the red soil called “jerina” or “terra rossa”, the refosco vine creates the Teran wine. Our grandparents claimed that only the vineyards around Šepulje, Križ, Tomaj, Godnje and Dutovlje produce the true Karst Teran wine. Already in the time of ancient Romans, it was known that Teran has a positive impact on the human body and inhibits anemia. It is still considered to be a refreshing wine with healing properties and the locals are very proud of it. There are few people that do not know this violet-shaded red wine from Karst.

At the viewpoint, you can also see nearby villages – Skopo, Kopriva, Krajna vas and Pliskovica. In the distance to the right, you can also see Štanjel on the top of a small hill, with a church on Sveta gora shining on its left. Between Štanjel and Sveta gora, you will notice peaks from Škratljevica to Rabotnica, Mali Ovčnjak, Sveta Katarina and over the Železna vrata (Iron Gate) pass to Trstelj and Črni hribi (Black Hills) that continue to the west. Behind them, shiny peaks of the Carnian and the Julian Alps are clearly visible.
*The dialect expression “rusa zemlja” means “rdeča zemlja” (red soil).*narečno: Rusa zemlja (rdeča zemlja, sskj) - “Terra rosa” or “jerina” is a red fertile soil that is often deposited in valleys and hollows. This soil can be found in warmer climates and contains a lot of iron oxide admixtures (in Mediterranean karst areas).Summarized after: Wikipedia
