Marko Sulli Sulčič
(1940–2012)
This sailor and publisher from Karst was born on 9 December 1940 in Trieste. He could also trace his origin to Dutovlje, where his mother lived in the Bunčetovi Homestead. In Dutovlje, he was known as “Bunčetov Marko”.
In 1960, he finished the maritime school in Piran. After serving the military term in the Italian navy and one-year service in the Mediterranean Maritime Agency in Trieste, he sought employment on the world’s seas and oceans, working on passenger and cargo ships. He spent 35 years in San Francisco, where he was a captain on tankers of the US Chevron company and received the “vice-commodore” honorary title in 1992, which is the highest title that a captain can achieve in a US merchant fleet. |
He was also an active member in the Slovenian Fishing Museum of the Trieste Coast in Sveti Križ (Santa Croce), which was the birthplace of his father. In 2010, the Gorica and Celje Mohor Company published his extremely interesting book titled Nafta (Oil), which was also presented at an event in the Bunčetovi Homestead in Dutovlje. Sulčič learned the most about oil in Angola, where he worked on one of the oil fields for five years. In his book, he described the formation and development of the world oil industry and wrote a few words on the world oil politics and oil tankers.
He also described his adventures and personal experience, which makes for an interesting read. In his spare time, he enjoyed making models of ships.
Marko Sulli Sulčič, sea captain, died on 29 June 2012 in the Gorica hospital.
