Brestovica water distribution system
The lack of water, which was the most severe in the dry summer period, presented a hard challenge to the locals each year. At first, people used the village ponds and wells, but soon this was no longer sufficient.
The economic momentum and rising population in the beginning of the 19th century forced the people to find a constant and sufficiently large water distribution that would suffice for industrialization and progress in the Karst.
In 1980, spelunkers and geologists studied the groundwater or Karst underground streams in Drča jama at Brestovica pri Komnu. This is how three wells were created in Klariče and included in a single facility. The Klariči well is located at the elevation of 16.5 metres, but the wells reach more than 70 metres underground.
In January 1981, the Yugoslav People's Army soldiers started works for the construction of the Brestovica water distribution system. The neighbouring village Sela na Krasu became the control centre for the entire Brestovica water distribution system.
From the well in Sela, the water distribution system runs to the well above Lipa pod Trsteljem, which allowed for the gravity flow of the planned quantities of water to Sežana.
The construction took place in several stages. The first stage was from Lipa to Komen, and the second and third stage were from Komen to Dutovlje and from Dutovlje to Križ, where the system connected to the existing Križ–Sežana system. The last two stages were constructed at the end of 1984. The total length of the listed water distribution systems, which consist of a steel pipe with a diameter of 500 mm, is more than 19 kilometres.
The introduction of self-contribution, personal income, retirement benefits and other taxes provided two thirds of all the collected funds for co-financing the construction of the primary water distribution system facilities, known as the Brestovica water distribution system.
On 15 December 1984, Sežana was connected to the primary Brestovica water distribution system, the total length of which amounts to 34.4 kilometres. By upgrading the water system to Sežana, normal economic development of Sežana and the Karst was ensured.
The main pipeline on the Brestovica water distribution system with the volume of 250 l/s provides water to the upper Karst with the volume of 50 l/s, while the remaining volume of 200 l/s goes to Sežana and onward.
